Benefits of a Daily Practice

If you’re reading this article, you are probably aware of yoga’s healing impact on both the mind and body. Different people are drawn to this ancient practice for all kinds of reasons – whether it’s looking to stretch and heal muscles in between high intensity trainings, finding a space to unwind and relax after commuting in traffic, or trying to establish a connection to one’s intuition and inner guide. Regardless of your motivation to get on your mat, if you’re looking to maximize your efforts then developing a consistent practice is crucial.

During the first moments in a yoga class, the teacher is focused on assisting your body in warming up. During this period you may be cued in “peddling out your dog” by bending the knees, allowing one heel at a time to reach the floor during downward-facing dog. It’s common to notice tightness in the hamstrings or shoulders, or other parts of your body. There is noticeable difference from the first to last downward-dog of class! However, if you practice only 1-2 times a week, then every time you are coming into class your body essentially has to start over. It is ideal to practice yoga at least 3-4 times a week, or every other day. This creates a cumulative effect, where you can now go deeper in each class.

“Consistency is Key to Transformation”

There are all kinds of benefits to practicing yoga on a regular basis! Here are just a few…

  • Increase in flexibility, improved coordination and sense of balance.

  • Enhanced cognitive function, resulting in a clearer mind that will be able to come up with solutions quicker.

  • Increased feelings of calmness and peace, resulting in a more positive outlook on life.

  • Studies show that yoga promotes emotional well-being. Therapists are beginning to recommend yoga more to their clients dealing with depression or anxiety.

  • You will see a total transformation in your body. Your muscles will strengthen and tone up, helping you look leaner and feel stronger. You’ll soon notice your body assuming it’s natural weight and shape.

  • Yoga strengthens not only the muscles, but the body as a whole. A regular practice will boost your immune system and your body’s natural ability to cleanse itself of toxins.

  • You’ll surprise yourself with what you’ll be able to accomplish in time. Certain poses can be intimidating initially, and some of us quickly dismiss even attempting them. As you continue your practice, you will discover you are much more capable than you previously thought! This increase in confidence is something that can be taken into your daily life off the mat as well.

  • Develop self-awareness of what is going on within your own body and mind. It’s almost like adopting an outside perspective, where you can observe your thoughts without becoming consumed by them. You can deepen your connection to your body as well, like being able to adjust yourself in poses because you’re more aware of what is going on. This is a lifelong process, but one where even the smallest observations should be celebrated!
